ABTA make move to protect all holidaymakers
Oct 7th
Mike Tanzer, Chief Executive of ABTA has addressed the ABTA Travel Convention attendees in Barcelona about the latest initiative to help safeguard holidaymakers who purchase flights or accommodation separately, as well as those who purchase packages.
In a fundamental effort to close one of the tourism industry’s biggest loopholes, ABTA, along with the support from its members are discussing with the Civil Aviation Authority and UK Government plans to introduce a scheme for holidaymakers who prefer to book non-package holidays, so they are covered in the event of a travel company or airliner for example going into administration.
TravelMole reports,‚If successful, the scheme could be one of the most radical developments in the industry for years‚¦ Tanzer said that of the 45 million trips taken by Britons every year, only 18 million were protected package holidays and ABTA believed all holidays should be protected.
The ABTA Chief said, “We needed to retain the integrity of the ABTA brand and the value to you in delivery consumer confidence.
With the current economic climate continually changing, the travel industry has much uncertainty for the future, which is why financial protection for holidaymakers is an essential must for consumer confidence to grow within the tourism industry.

The UK cruise market according to experts will be bigger than ever, with more choice of destination, larger ships to choose from, experts are predicting an ‚upswing‚ on this particular market in the travel industry.
This year alone the cruise industry has seen a boost in interest as well as sales and experts don‚t think this trend will go away soon, especially with more UK holidaymakers showing interest in cruise holidays.
According to eTurboNews, “The Passenger Shipping Association said that about 1.5 million people in Britain took to cruises in 2008. Despite the huge economic downturn, these same kind of figures were seen in 2009 and are expected again in 2010.
With travel agents and tour operators reducing prices for cruise holidays, the affordability of a cruise holiday has opened up the market to more UK holidaymakers than ever before.
