Dubai’s hub receives record number of visitors

In 2009 a record 40.9 million international passengers passed through Dubai International airport according to latest figures.
An increase in traffic from the previous year was up 9.2 percent making it the world‚s fastest growing airport. Other airports to record an increase of international passengers were Istanbul, Kuala Lumpur and Cairo.
Traffic is expected to increase in 2010 with expected growth of 13.6 percent, estimating annual passenger number to the hub of 46 million.
Paul Griffiths, Chief Executive of Airports Council International said, “Dubai’s location, which puts it just four hours’ flying time from one third of the world’s population.
“An open skies policy that welcomes competition, top notch infrastructure and compelling tourist attractions. All add up to make Dubai a very attractive hub for an ever increasing number of travellers.
Dubai launch budget airline carrier

Dubai has announced the launch of the first budget airline which will commence business in a few months time. The name of the airline will be ‚flydubai‚ and despite the current global economic situation, the Gulf emirate is hoping the budget carrier will enhance the economy.
Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed al-Maktoum said: “We are committed to bringing a new option to the market and to growing the region’s budget air travel business; this will benefit our economy, our people, and tourism business as a whole.”
‘flydubai’ will operate 2 next-gen 737-800 airplanes on the 2 routes it is starting with, which are Beirut and Amman, based and operating from Dubai airport. The new addition to the Emirates carrier will be in competition with at least 4 other budget airlines in the region.
