More luxury holiday retreats to be developed in The Maldives

The Maldives government has announced that 19 uninhabited islands in the island group are to be leased to developers to create more luxury holiday hideaways.

The country has become one of the richest in the region thanks for the exotic and exclusive resorts where holidaymakers enjoy the clean, blue ocean and privacy.

There are also plans to 10 new regional airports which will help both tourists and locals commute between the 1,192 islands in The Maldives, 91 of which are holiday resorts.

Tourism accounts for more than a third of the country’s economy.
